Wow. Just wow. What an excellent movie! It's strange that Peter Jackson is still making LOTR movies, because he originally wanted to let Guilermo del Toro be the director, but man, am I glad he did not! The special effects are, logically, remarkably better than the ones used in the sequels! My compliments to the entire special effects department with in particular Sean Douglas Brennan, Karl Chisholm and Eric Cotton. The acting is great, Martin Freeman puts down an instant-classic performance of Bilbo. My personal favourite and in my opinion underrated actor is Andy Serkis, aka Smeágol / Gollum, has done once again an incredible motion-capturing job (check YouTube), and I hope that he now gets the fame he deserves. Hell, I can go on like this for ages. The plot is great, the humor is great, and the special effects and acting are fantastic! If you haven't seen this picture yet, shame on you! Go now! Now!
