Rebecca: But he'd seen it before that. I was a little bit worried about Max seeing it because it is his story and he's seeing people portraying the people around him who didn't survive. So that's, you know, I was sort of worried about how he'd react to that. But he, and so he watched it in little bits first and then, you know, saw it for the first time in the cinema at TIFF. And he honestly, absolutely loves it, which is such a relief for me, but also such a privilege to be able to have helped him bring his story to the big screen and tell the story of everyone around him like Yanek and his sister Zonia and his mother Faigie. And so he watches it every chance he can get. He comes to as many festivals as possible within traveling distance. And he really, really loves it, which is a huge joy.
Interviewer: I think it's a film of contrasts. Obviously, it's set during a time of immense hate. But also, you know, we see how love can help or hope with even the most argumentative circumstances. Can you talk a little bit about these themes for me and how important they were to, you know, to you as a filmmaker.
Rebecca: Yeah, and the sort of, well I mean obviously the light and the dark, the evil and the good, and I mean I think something that I found really interesting was this idea of how does a young kid process all of this trauma, and especially a young kid who is a young artist in the making, right, and he's in this incredible environment, a very mythical environment, the forests in, you know, a very mythical place in Europe, in Eastern Europe especially. And so I was really interested to explore that, the sort of juxtaposition of this awful evil going on in the world, which you don't, we don't actually see a ton of in the film, which is deliberate.
And this beauty of the place that he's, that has given him sanctuary, but it's also very, you know, it's a threatening, he's scared of it. Again, very fairy tale-like. And then also the characters, I mean, the characters, you know, Jasko, the, you're not sure about Jasko when you first meet him, but it becomes quite clear. And then there's the awful police officer who comes into Jasko's house. And just within that scene, you see the like juxtaposition and figured in the evil.
Richard: You really struck me with what you just said about the seed of the artist in the mind of that child was actually part of his salvation that he was able to survive mentally because of what art was doing to him and his brain. But I actually wanted to say one of the things that I really might be on that phone as a question, but one of the things that I think Rebecca was so brilliant at, and it's not always the case with directors. In terms of the word performance, I feel like you let Jett and myself and all the other actors sort of live on screen and you captured something rather than disturbing it too much and that I felt when we were shooting is that when the water didn't need to be disturbed you left it alone and I do think that is because of your documentary background is that you sort of you're almost sort of hiding in the trees observing life and that was something very palpable to me about the film.
Interviewer: We've a question from the audience, Sean wants to know, did they ever identify Yanek or find his family?
Rebecca: Yanek or Jasko? So, Richard, I'll give you a quick one of both. But with Yanek, yes, and I don't wanna push you towards my documentary, but there is, and actually Max's memoir also talks about this. We did find some members of Yanek's family, a very young aunt and uncle who had left for Israel just before the war and they had managed it, and their family is still living in Israel. So we did find a Yanek connection, which was huge for Max because he has lived with this incredible guilt
and lived with the idea that he's the only one who can hold Yanek's memory for the world and...
Richard: … the way that they were kind of hunting these two innocent lives. It was almost like an obsession. So yeah, I tried to take on all of those things and do them justice.
Interviewer: I think I always love finding young Max. I think Jett is sensational in the movie, but I can't imagine how difficult his casting. So you need a young boy to do stuff, you know, I think, you know a grown professional, adults were struggling with it. How difficult was it to find your Max?
Rebecca: Yeah, so Jett Klyne, who plays Max, is Canadian. This is a Canadian film, Canadian funded film. I live in Canada, I sound like I am English, but I'm also Canadian. And so Jett is a really fantastic young Canadian actor from out west in Canada. And I was, there was always a concern as I was writing this that, you know, Max at the time was 12 years old. I thought, you know, wow, is this a 12 year old going to be able to hold this whole film...

Вдруг решила пересмотреть всё, что было снято вокруг темы Штирлица (старое). Начала с первого - "Бриллианты для диктатуры пролетариата"... Думаете, вообще нету знаков? - Вы никогда ещё так не! Любимый советский композитор Ричарда, встречайте - Арво Пярт! :D
Музыка - фигня, если честно, Ричард, прости! А фильм хороший. Ну, и дело было в Та-аллинне-е... ;)
Попался мне как-то сериал "В пустыне смерти", в котором, казалось бы, не может быть никаких знаков, но нет, они и тут есть) Начиная с неоффтопных нам Орлы Брэйди, Джона Белла и Эллы-Рэй Смит и заканчивая появлением персонажа по имени Гай.
Вот те на! Хотела уж было воскликнуть, где это РА с конопатым пересекся, а он, оказывается, там же, где я сперва и самого РА не приметила)))
Не удивляйтесь, я в "Хоббите" детей особо не рассматривала и не запомнила (только девочек, когда смотрела закадровое и узнала, что это дочки ПиДжея). А Джона знаю только по "Чужестранке". Как оказалось - не только))) :face:
