Note: The promised subtitles never materialised on my copy of the DVD and the sound quality was not always 100% (especially at the start, even when the volume was up as high as it could get). So please let me know if you spot any errors etc. Thanks. Enjoy!

OPENING CREDITS

(The screen is blank, except for opening credit captions. Sounds of kissing frequently occur between spoken lines)

Lisa (American accent): I wondered if you could love differently? (pause) If you were a eunuch?

Darryl (American accent): Ahhhh! I’d be cut off from my purpose in life

Lisa (American accent): You’ll never change, will you?

Darryl (American accent): You have to admit, it feels pretty damn good

Lisa (American accent): Like a volcano erupting (pause) We give sex too much power

Darryl (American accent): You want me just as much as I want you. It’s ... animal instinct (pause) I don’t think it’s the nature for any man to be monogamous. You know that because you seem to know what men want. You make us feel like men (whispers) You give us control

Lisa (American accent): We make you believe you have the control (As the opening credits close, we finally see Darryl & Lisa, kissing intimately. He is standing & leaning over her, she is laying back on a sofa. English accent) I can’t breathe! (He is wearing light colour trousers and a lighter colour shirt, with several buttons undone, revealing a white vest underneath. His shirt sleeves are rolled up. She is wearing a black dress, with straps that cross over her back)

Darryl (English accent, coaxing): Come on, you can do it

Lisa (English accent, angry): Damn it! (She pushes Darryl away & sits up) I can’t breathe! (The director - Alex - lifts his hands in frustration. A man & woman, sitting on theatre seats in the row behind the director, stand)

Darryl (English accent): She feels faint (He strokes Lisa’s shoulders with his right hand as he sits beside her. The camera is behind them) Tell me what’s going on?

Lisa (English accent, angry): Forget it!

Darryl (English accent, gently): Talk to me (She shakes his arm away. The camera moves in front of them)

Lisa: (English accent, angry): Why should I? Besides, you always said you knew me better than I knew myself, remember? (She runs his fingers of her left hand through her hair & sighs)

Darryl (English accent): Is it me?

Lisa (sighs. English accent): I’ll get over it

Darryl (English accent): I don’t understand

Lisa (English accent): You don’t need to!

Darryl (English accent, irritated): You shouldn’t get so stressed! (He stands) Mark? Can we have some lights on stage please?

Alex (English accent, stands): OK. Let’s just take a break. Go and have some dinner. One hour only

OUTSIDE

(Darryl walks out & lights a cigarette. 3 old newspaper headlines are shown – “Newman’s wife and her secret affair”, “Newman fails at the box office” – with photo of a younger RA, with longer hair - & “Plus chose one of these blockbuster novels absolutely FREE!” Darryl walks to look pensively at the posters outside, which advertise the play he is rehearsing, called “Where The Tradewinds Meet” & has the poster tagline “A scornful and forbidden love affair”. Underneath a photo of Darryl & Lisa are the credits for the play: Darryl Newman (his name is on the left) Lisa Harley (her name is on the right) Written and directed by Norman Miller (his name is in the middle))

LISA’S DRESSING ROOM

Lisa’s Assistant (English accent): Are you really thinking of going ahead with this?

Lisa (hair has curlers in. English accent, irritated): I’m trying really hard but this time he’s just pushing me over the edge!

Lisa’s Assistant (English accent): Well, he’s had it really tough lately. Still ...

Lisa (English accent, irritated): I don’t know. Things were fine until ... (She takes a cigarette from a packet) Hell! I thought, you know, I could do this show. I was really looking forward to working with him (Darryl opens the door & enters as she lights her cigarette. Coldly) What now?

Darryl (English accent, irritated): What are you doing in here?

Lisa (English accent, sarcastic): I like it here. No creative conflicts

Darryl (English accent, smiles sarcastically. Firmly) Forget about dinner break! We’ve got work to do! Tomorrow’s opening night and I’m going to get screwed because of you (Lisa looks angry/hurt)

Lisa (English accent): Give me five minutes

Darryl (English accent, bitter): I give you five seconds! Meet me on stage! (He leaves. She smokes)

ON STAGE

(We see the empty theatre. Darryl sits backwards on a stage-facing chair & looks out at the empty seats as Lisa enters)

Darryl (American accent): I thought you had more confidence in me

Lisa (American accent): I do! I want to! Oh, I knew what I was getting myself into. You’ve your own life to live. But where do I fit?

Darryl (English accent, irritated): Oh, for God sake!

Lisa (English accent, bitter): What?

Darryl (English accent): It’s wrong

Lisa (English accent): Huh! (She looks to her left, disdainfully/sarcastically)

Darryl (English accent): You need to give it more feeling (She looks at him disdainfully) You can give it a lot more feeling

Lisa (English accent, sarcastic): I wouldn’t talk!

Darryl (English accent, hurt/irritated): Look! (He looks down, then at her) We’ve had two months rehearsals and still ...

Lisa (English accent, turns away): My God! You treat this play as if it was a matter of life or death! (She sits on a sofa)

Darryl (English accent, irritated): I have reason to!

Lisa (English accent, coldly): You want it so bad, don’t you? One more chance to prove you’re a star

Darryl (English accent, walks & leans over her closely): Why do you fight me so much?

Lisa (English accent): I’m not

Darryl (English accent): Resenting me for something?

Lisa (English accent, coldly): I’m beginning to

Darryl (looks at her, smiles coldly, then shakes his head. English accent): Forget it! (He stands) Whatever happens, happens. Right? (He walks away)

Lisa (stands to face him, English accent, firmly): No (She takes a step towards him) Let’s do this (Darryl looks back at her. His eyes soften. She has a can of drink. He walks back to her)

Darryl (English accent): Let’s do it (He takes the can & has a swig himself. Smiles) You’ve got vodka in here!

Lisa (English accent, sarcastic): There’s a difference (Darryl moves the can away when she tries to take it back) It’s cherry flavour (She takes the can & walks away, turning her back on Darryl)

Darryl (English accent, amused): You shouldn’t drink that stuff

Lisa (English accent): I only poured in a little to relax me (American accent) It makes me happy, OK? (Darryl laughs. Lisa turns to face him. English accent, coldly) What? (Darryl covers his face, still laughing & turns away from her) One drink does it, hey? (She raises the glass in her left hand) Now look who’s laughing! (Darryl stops laughing & looks down. Lisa sits/reclines on the sofa, with her legs up. She moves her feet) I can’t stand these shoes! (Darryl smiles & walks to her. Resting her right arm on the armrest, she looks fed up & rests her head against her right hand) Darryl? What made you want to do this play?

Darryl (English accent): You know why (He is sitting on a chair opposite her. Lisa looks at him) It’s been twelve years since I’ve done theatre (Darryl shrugs) The stage is what made me (He smiles at her. She smiles back) I miss the days when I pull myself into a role. One you can really sink your teeth into (He smiles) Even get lost in a character for days. Months (Pause. Lisa looks fed up) Emotionally draining. But for some insane reason I loved it (He smiles) I’d get a kick out of really shaking people up. Making them actually believe I was somebody else

Lisa (smiles & nods, English accent): You like to keep your true nature hidden, don’t you?

Darryl (English accent, increasingly bitter): People see what they want to see (pause) The trouble is, once you become a commodity, you have to ... play into people’s fantasies of who they think you are (Pause) Unfortunately, after a while, they stop taking you seriously as an actor (Sad) And people you thought you trusted end up ... turning their backs on you (Lisa looks down. Darryl looks at Lisa. Pause) They even betray you

Lisa (looks at Darryl. English accent): Like your wife?

Darryl (looks down. English accent): I left her so fast, she didn’t know where to turn

Lisa (English accent, coldly): Huh! You’d like to believe that, wouldn’t you?

Darryl (English accent): Am I that bad?

Lisa (English accent): You’re not very forgiving, you know?

Darryl (English accent, firmly): I don’t forgive!

Lisa (shrugs, English accent): That’s too bad

Darryl (English accent, firmly): I don’t forgive anyone who betrays my trust

Lisa (smiles. English accent): Such an easy way out!

Darryl (English accent, hurt): Is that what you think? (Pause. Lisa sighs & looks down. Darryl stands, firmly) Look, there are a lot of people depending on us to make this show and you are not going to louse it up for me

Lisa (English accent, coldly) What’s wrong? (She stands) Too many flops on you résumé? (She walks to Darryl)

Darryl (English accent, laughs): You’ll be sorry you said that!

Lisa (English accent, coldly): There were a couple of films that weren’t quite ...

Darryl (English accent, yells): Don’t laugh at me!

Lisa (English accent, coldly): Then don’t take your issues out on me

Darryl (English accent, angry): The only issue I have is with you!

Lisa (laughs, English accent, sarcastic): Huh! Should I be flattered?

Darryl (English accent, quietly): We need to get back to work

Lisa (bends down, then stands up again. English accent, coldly) And which scene do you want to work on?

Darryl (English accent, smugly): The one you gave up on today

Lisa (English accent, coldly): Shall we start with my curtain line? (She walks to the edge of the stage & drapes a coat across her shoulder. Darryl walks determinedly towards her and kisses her passionately) Stop it! (Darryl grabs her when she tries to turn away from him & tugs her coat off. He lifts her into his arms. Intimate scene on the sofa. Darryl has his shirt on to begin with, then is topless. Lisa appears to freeze after a quite a few seconds. Darryl looks at her)

Darryl (English accent, coldly): Can’t even do it with your own husband! Only with lovers of the lowest grade! (He stands & pushes her left leg away. Lisa sits up & adjusts her clothing. Darryl throws the can of drink that he & Lisa shared in anger)

Lisa (stands. English accent coldly): Go ahead! Retaliate! Rant and rave! Just don’t leave me! (She turns away. Darryl grabs her)

Darryl (English accent, yells): Should have thought about that before you had someone else screw you senseless!

Lisa (English accent, coldly): What else did you expect? To be locked up in a ball, chain and chastity belt for the rest of my life?

Darryl (English accent, yells): I trusted you! (She appears upset. Coldly) What’s the matter? Your shield wearing too thin?

Lisa (English accent, upset): Yes! For God sake! I wanted to escape! (She walks away) Anywhere away from this battlefield! (Darryl turns to face her)

Darryl (English accent, hurt): I gave you my body and soul!

Lisa (turns to face him. English accent): I did too. But you pushed me too far

Darryl (English accent, hurt): We made a pact. A promise that was supposed to be forever

Lisa (English accent, coldly): Yeah (She laughs) Even beyond ‘til death do us part’!

Darryl (English accent, hurt): I see. Never satisfied, were you?

Lisa (sighs & looks up. English accent): Oh, Darryl! I can’t keep this up. Forget the play. I’m not doing it (She turns away)

Darryl (English accent, hurt): Not good enough for you, eh?

Lisa (stops walking - at the edge of the stage. English accent): Darryl (She folds her arms, facing away from Darryl. Pause) When I first laid eyes on you (She shrugs, pause) I turned the other way to run (She smiles, pause) I knew you were ‘dangerous territory’ (Darryl looks down, then at Lisa, who is still facing away from him at the edge of the stage. Pause) I dared myself not to look back. But when I did you looked ... (She shakes her head, pause) Right back at me (She turns to face him, pause) And how irresistible you were (pause) It was almost as if we could read each other’s minds

Darryl (half-smiles. English accent): I never had to say a word (Lisa looks down. Darryl’s arms are folded in a defensive/protective gesture. Pause) How do you put up with me?

Lisa (smiles at him. English accent): Determination

Darryl (smiles. English accent): Determination?

Lisa (walks to him. English accent, assertive): Determination to be admired. By one of the greatest actors of our time

Darryl (smiles, English accent): I remember when I met you

Lisa (looks down, then at Darryl. English accent): You do, huh?

Darryl (smiles. English accent): Mmmm. I wondered why I’d spent so long searching for the right woman. I thought I was a lucky man (Lisa looks down. Pause. Softly) I still do (Lisa looks up at him. Both half-smile. They kiss passionately. The camera zooms out to show the theatre seats – empty - as the end credits play)

END
