I am not a geologist but as far as I understand the mountains are about 1.3 billion year old. They existed when what is now Denmark and Norway were pulled apart. Denmark stretched and sunk 2500 meter. This created a basin. Then for millions of years sediments piled on top of the gneiss which created the flat country we now call Denmark.
